In India it is the tendency of most people to avoid things that can be dangerous and sometimes fatal. I guess Indian lives are cheaper than the other counter parts of world. We are developing in a fast pace, our economy has touched heights and it is expected that soon we will reach on higher rankings in global leadership. But there are many loopholes in the path of success and glory which are intended to be ignored like corruption, poverty, unorganized growth, insufficient infrastructure, etc. we have high rise buildings, multi storied apartments, commercial buildings, etc. But are we ready to combat emergency situations like fire? Most of our multi storied residential societies do not have any fire equipments and if they have they are not in functional condition. It is the result of lack of awareness or neglect of citizens. We never bother to check the system whether it is working or not if we have one and we behave like there cannot be any incident of fire with us but it is totally wrong. Fire safety is very important for every individual. It can happen to anyone at anytime without any alarm in the world as it is an uncertain event that is why we need to be conscious and ready to tackle the emergency situation at our best in order to minimise human life casualties, injuries and property damage. We all need to be ready for such contingencies.Government has made some rules regarding fire safety like any developed property must have basic fire safety equipment but there is no cross check and thus the actual purpose to handle emergency is neglected. Rule is obeyed but by compromising on the quality of fire fighting equipments in order to save on cost. Today almost all developers provide fire equipments in their multi storied projects but no one checks it after installation and the servicing part is out of picture. This happens only in India that is why I am asking a question do you feel that the life of people in India is that cheap that no one cares for its safety, we are also included in it. Do all of us know how to operate the fire fighting equipment installed in our building? Do we know the functioning of such systems?We are developing very fast but ruling out some basic requirements to live safely. The fire exit access should be clutter free and not blocked. If you have any handicapped member in the family then make sure his room is near to exit door to make the exit for that member easy.4. The apartment owner’s association can make it a point to check the fire equipments to know whether they are in good workable condition or not annually.5. General knowledge to avoid fires in a home or office should be learned as a responsible citizen. One should know what steps to be taken immediately after the fire breaks out.6. Fire doors are those which are made from special fire resistance material. They are designed to protect us from fire, heat and smoke for a period of 20 minutes to 3 hours. They are really useful for high rise towers or commercial complexes but the important thing is that they should be in proper working condition and thus they need to be maintained in a timely fashion to operate smoothly and making a barrier between fire and us when needed.7. Most of the times the fire source in any building is faulty electrical fittings and that is why we need to check the any defaults in the area where maximum wirings are going through like meter room or ducts, etc. The owners association can do the annual check with help of electrician for any breakage or spark in the electrical wirings of building.It is said that “Prevention is always better than cure”. The same lesson we need to learn here that take all the precautions to avoid any unpleasant accidents just due to our neglect.
