Are Flyovers a Solution to Pune’s Traffic Congestion

A flyover is an elevated road at a junction. We all know that a junction that connects different streams of roads creates problems or traffic jams and takes too much time to pass trough. To solve this problem flyovers came into sight and it is still unsure whether these flyovers actually solving the problem or just adding some more new problems. All major cities of India are facing the problem of traffic congestion and flyover as a poor solution.Pune once famous for its greenery, open spaces, clear air and mountains has become completely opposite today because of the uncontrollable development. Once Pune was called cyclists’ paradise but now it is a nightmare for cyclists. All green patches are being destroyed one by one by the development authorities in the name of city development. Is it really worth to grow concrete jungle by removing green old trees? A city can develop without destroying the greenery but who thinks about the future. If the present state of affairs are continue then the city will no longer be liveable.City traffic is increasing day by day and the authorities are building new bridges, flyovers and subways to divert traffic but not trying to solve the root cause of the problem. The problem is transportation not the traffic. As a part of globalisation the private vehicular transport is promoted rather than public transport, expressways are built rather than improving railways network, air fuel price reduced to make air travel cheaper, excise duty reduced on cars rather than subsidising bus and rail services. In Pune there is an explosion of private vehicles and the public transport is neglected. In Pune the government comes up with new bridges and subways to divert traffic. But the traffic problems never come to an end. The disadvantages of flyovers are:

  • They take too much time to complete.
  • They are really expensive approximately fifty to hundred crores and every common man whether he uses it or not has to pay for it.
  • While construction they disturb the whole traffic and people have to use diversions.
  • The flyovers are used by only 30 % of the population who wants to avoid junction.
  • They are ugly structures and lots of green trees have to be destroyed to construct them.
  • They do not reduce traffic but just shift traffic from one place to another place.
  • The flyovers encourage private vehicles like cars and two wheelers.
  • They create problems for the pedestrians to cross the junction as the speedy vehicles don’t stop there.
  • They give vehicles speed and thus accidents can happen easily.
  • No use of flyovers for the public transport because buses have to stop on junctions to get the passengers.
  • A flyover makes the congestion worse at the subsequent junctions (this is the case at the sancheti chowk).

The national urban transport policy does not support flyovers and JNNURM (The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) has refused to fund these flyovers. If we see the worldwide no new flyovers are being built but the existing ones are dismantled. Isn’t it enough for us to take a lesson and invest in the right thing.Flyovers are just the intermediate solution for traffic congestion but still they are routinely proposed by the consultants. Nobody has ever studied the data or carried out any research to find out that the stated goals are achieved or not by constructing the flyovers. The Pune university flyover is a controversial because of delayed construction and severe congestion on the junction for many years along with its design that is considered flawed. In short we can say that flyovers are poor solution to a very big problem. We should improve the public transport instead of constructing flyovers. It will take fewer amounts of money and time and encourage people to use public transport rather than using private vehicles. It will also help to improve our environment. We need to give a second thought to the new proposals of construction of flyovers as it is taking away the charm of Pune city by overloading the roads by vehicles.- Ruchi Mahajan.займ на карту без отказов круглосуточновзять кредит онлайн
