The Aravalem waterfall is located at Aravalem just two kilometres from Sanquelim Village in Bicholim Taluka in North Goa district. This waterfall enhances the glory of Goa in Monsoon as during rains it takes the huge shape and bursts at the bottom with robust sound. The view of the fall during and after rains is breathtaking. It drops from a height of fifty metres from the rocky cliff of the mountain. At the bottom it becomes a huge pretty lake. One can take a dip into cool, clear and refreshing water of the fall. Just near the fall you can explore the site of rock cut Buddhist caves known as Aravalem caves.
The Aravalem caves are situated in Sanquelim and have different stories regarding their inception and creators. These caves are counted among the ancient monuments of Goa. Experts from archaeological department says that these caves are built dates back in the fifth or sixth century A.D. it is believed that these caves are being built by Buddhist monks who travelled continuously as you can find a sanctuary in the north side while Viharas at the south. These caves are built by cutting the laterite stone. There is a Shivalinga in the second cave having an inscription in Sanskrit and Brahmi languages of the seventh century. Experts found some resemblance from the well known Elephanta and Ellora caves. There is another tale that says that these caves are Pandvas caves. It is believed that the great Pandvas from Mahabharata epic have resided at these caves when they were on exile. These caves have become the shooting location for many movies. You need to travel just nine kilometres in the south of Bicholim town to reach Aravalem caves.The Rudreshwar temple which was initially a Buddhist temple is a place for devotees today. It is the holy shrine of Lord Shiva. There is a stream of water when you come out of the temple falling from the rock cliff. The best time to visit this place is monsoon or just after monsoon that is from August to October. The picturesque location of this place won’t allow you to get bored even for a single moment as it has everything to offer from nature’s delight to historic exploration. The park near the waterfall can be used to relax or watch the waterfall in its youth from different angles while sitting comfortably.You can take state transport from Mapusa to reach Sanquelim village.
