28 years ago, India witnessed the emergence of first metro project in the City of Joy, Kolkata. Since its inception, this infrastructural wonder has changed the city outlook by providing better transit facilities to city dwellers. Another remarkable benchmark in the infrastructure segment was set-up by Delhi Metro Rail Project. It is India’s first modern public transportation project that had completely transformed the transportation system of Delhi. The ever-increasing population and the growing traffic have encouraged many big as well as small cities to come-up with modern means of transport facilities like Metro rails that provide comfortable and smooth transport services to the people. Most of the city population is shifting from private modes of conveyance to public transport. Metro rails not only contributes in smooth flow of the traffic but also help to reduce the time distance between two extreme locations of the city where it used to take almost one hour to reach a particular destination now it takes only 10 to 15 minutes. Being world’s 13th largest metro (lengthwise), Delhi Metro comprise of about 200 trains that covers 70,000 km everyday. There are about 142 metro stations, out of which 35 are underground, 5 are at-grade and the rest are elevated. Metros have helped to save a lot fuel. It is the first metro rail project in the world to get carbon credits for reducing greenhouse gas release that has been certified by United Nations.Bangalore metro:Namma Metro (our metro) as the name suggests, this transport service is truly dedicated to the people of Bangalore. Keeping in mind the standing of the garden city, the metro stations are surrounded with verdant greenery through which the rail passes in gentle curves. The metro trains have fully air-conditioned coaches and gives an international-class transit experience to the travelers. The metro provides services from morning 6 to night 10. At present there are about 43 stations and some of them are presented in proximity to prime locations of Bangalore which have largely benefited the citizens of the city. The extensions connect many colleges, commercial zones and other such major localities.Kolkata metro:Kolkata already marked the presence of first metro in 1984. Over the years, additional extensions were constructed. The people of Kolkata can now take the pleasure of the modern metro system as the government has modernized the metro system of Kolkata. The stations would undergo renovation and the travelers could enjoy top-notch facilities like automatic fare collection, passenger control system, integrated security system, air-conditioned coaches, automatic signaling etc. Kolkata metro have reserved seats for women and senior commuters. Kolkata metro provides one of the cheapest transport facilities in the world with minimum fare of Rs. 4 to maximum of Rs.14. The metro has total 24 stations, 15 underground, 2 at-grade and 7 elevated.Mumbai metro:As the city population is increasing, traffic problem is also growing rapidly in the financial capital, Mumbai. Therefore to eliminate this jamming issue, the city came up with a metro rail project. Great look from outside, comfortable and cool from inside, Mumbai metro has the capacity to carry over 280 to 300 passengers per compartment. The quality ride allows a noise-free and smooth travelling. The proposed metro rail will connect business hubs like Nariman point, BKC and MIDC. The project is still under-construction and is expected to operate from this October.Chennai metro:Chennai already has a good suburban railway network but due to the lack of connectivity to Central and South Chennai, the metro rail project was proposed. Though the project is still under construction, it has already won a lot of applauds due to its modern and economical service offering. The first service will be available to the people by January 2014. Total 100 stations are projected to be constructed out of which 19 would be underground and 12 elevated. The metro would provide efficient services to the travelers like automatic fare collection, electronic information display boards, automatic announcement system, escalators, lifts etc. The stations will also comprise of shopping malls, parking space and Wi-Fi facility. The metro system will be connected to other various modes of transport of the city.Jaipur metro:Rapid industrialization and commercial development have led to the emergence of metro rail system in Jaipur. This infrastructure service provides trains that would bear 1,314 passengers. The coaches are designed so oversized that each of the coach can carry passengers of almost 6 buses. The first metro service is expected to start from this month. The first set of coaches has been delivered from Bangalore. The first route of the metro will connect Mansarovar to Chandpole.Kochi metro:The major port city of Kerala apart from sea-routes has shifted its focus to rail routes by the upcoming metro project. The metro project will follow models of Chennai and Delhi metro. The first service from Aluva to Palarivattom is anticipated to get completed till December 2015, second by March 2016 and the third from Aluva to Petta will be finished in next three years.Hyderabad metro:The fully automated upcoming transit system of Hyderabad is said to be world’s largest elevated metro PPP project based on design, built, finance, operate and transfer. The commuters can use Delhi metro token or smart card to travel by Rapid metro.Apart from these metropolitan and Tier I cities, the Union urban development ministry has made a proposal to come-up with more metro rail projects in Tier II and developing cities like Pune, Surat, Indore, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Kanpur and Patna.
