Work on Navi Mumbai Airport Accelerates

airportNavi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Airport project will witness a shift to the Greenfield airports policy from the existing project implementers. This shift will facilitate faster work approvals for the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport Project. The proposed airport will come up in the Kopra-Panvel area and is expected to be fully functional by 2016. This project is a joint venture of the Airport Authority of India (AAI), CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation) and the Government of Maharashtra. The estimated cost of this project is approximately Rs. 9,000 crore. The airport site includes two parallel runways spread out in an area of 10km (approx), each 3700m. The airport will be all set to accommodate 10 million passengers every year from its date of inauguration. By 2030 this number will increase to 60 million.The approval work of this project was caught up on facing opposition from the environmental ministry. Finally it received a nod from the Ministry towards the end of the November 2010. The project also faced several other obstacles like land acquisition and local oppositions have stalled the progress of this project.
