Madurai: The Madurai Corporation is edging close to setting a record with its tax collection touching 1 crore in a day. The Corporation is implementing feasible strategies to leap over the financial hitches and fund deficits. This Friday the revenue department managed to collect Rs. 1 crore towards property tax, reaching an all time high.The Corporation has been taking stringent action against tax defaulters. In its recent hunt, property tax worth Rs. 25 lakh was recovered from two gigantic commercial properties. The shopping malls were sent out words of caution and warning with respect to tax defaults. Commercial and residential spaces were asked to pay the property tax dues immediately in order to avoid legal action. Almost 1.85 lakh spaces in Madurai generate revenue worth Rs. 54 crore each year for the Corporation.The civic administration is taking up stern measures in order to recovery pending tax on commercial and residential properties in Madurai. Almost Rs. 34 crore is due from previous year’s property tax collection. The Corporation is keeping a close watch on defaulters in order to patch up the chasm in revenue collection. 60% of the property tax due has been successfully recovered and the Corporation is doing the needful to recover the remaining 40%.The Madurai Corporation is taking effective steps to ensure the dues are collected on time.
