Ahmedabad: With an intention to boost the efforts of preserving the Walled City heritage, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to come up with an entire department dedicated for the heritage protection. The new heritage department which would be set-up by AMC will have a special team that will consist of an assistant engineer, city assistant engineer, assistant town development officer, technical supervisor and inspector.The main benefit of this fully dedicated department is that the numerous permissions which are required to repair and maintain the heritage structures will follow a swift and transparent process. Apart from this the department would also get the much required expertise that would include the conservation architect and two assistant architects.The town development officers (TDO) in the zonal offices earlier avoided any type of conversation with the heritage department regarding the structure repairs and conservation. But the current fully fledged department will have an exclusive team of TDOs. With the Walled City, AMC will also look after the listing of the heritage structure outside the old city.According to the Municipal Commissioner, it was very essential to come up with a separate department for heritage protection and mainly before sending report to UNESCO regarding the status of World Heritage Site, next year. The standing committee will give the approval for the creation of this department.INTACH has already started preparing the list of heritage sites outside the Walled City. Once the list is prepared, the department will supervise the permissions and preservation activities.
