Pune: Over 2,500 families dwelling in the slums of the city have been shifted to homes provided under slum rehabilitation scheme. There are over 2 lakh families in Pune which is living in slums.The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) is a legal body that looks after the housing schemes for slum dwellers in Pune and Pimpri- Chinchwad. Pune Municipal Corporation administration was asked a question by the elected representatives regarding the slum rehab scheme and status of those schemes. The administration in reply said that around 49 SRA schemes have been approved till this October. Out of these residential schemes, 20 were completed with advantages extending to 2,640 slum families till now.In Pune, out of the total population, 43% of population belongs to the poor category. There are about 564 slums in this city which provides dwelling space to almost 2, 10,000 families. Apart from these, 15% of the population of Pimpri Chinchwad area that covers 36,000 families resides in 72 slum localities of this location.Slum Rehabilitation Authority is an autonomous body that works under the state government. SRA works on the housing policy where no budget is required. The builders are welcomed to bid for developing the land in place of floor place index (FSI) as an incentive which can be utilized by the builders for other projects. The project allocates home of around 270 sq ft to the slum residents in the city.The state government has started with rehabilitation of 133 slums under the SRA schemes.
