Udupi: Residents living in Udupi District seeking for a relaxation in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. People residing along the riverside and near the seashore in Udupi are demanding to relax the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. The CRZ rules have put restrictions on the residents claiming that these residents can not take up any new construction in this area.The CRZ rules set by the government are applicable up to a distance of 500 meters from the high tide line in this region. But the Kerala and Goa state government have relaxed this distance to 50 meters from the high tide line. With these rules from Goa and Kerala states, the Udupi residents are strongly demanding the relaxation in the CRZ rules.The ministry of environment and forests has curtailed the houses and building in this region for development and even residents are restricted from taking up the repair work in their houses.According to the CRZ rules set in 2011, the coastal land has been classified in four different zones; CRZ I, CRZ II, CRZ III, and CRZ IV. The areas like mangroves and mudflats are included in CRZ I; Developed areas in CRZ II; underdeveloped areas in CRZ III and CRZ IV includes territorial waters from low tide line to 12 nautical miles in sea.Gram Panchayats of these regions have given proper knowledge of CRZ rules and residents are allowed to do the repair works with proper permissions from CRZ office established in Udupi.
