New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has announced that the immunity to pay property tax will be extended till 30th November 2013 and a new settlement scheme will be put in place to waive penalty and interest on payment.Rajesh Bhatia, Chairman of North Delhi Municipal Corporation property tax committee said that this scheme will benefit thousands of residents. He said, “The long-awaited scheme of settling property tax arrears with immunity of penalty and waiver of interest has started from August 19 and the scheme will continue till November 30 this year.” He also said that the department is making a real effort to collect the property tax that is due to a number of government and private organizations. The tax amounts to crores of rupees.Yogendra Singh Mann the Public Relations Officer of North Delhi Municipal Corporation said that the scheme has been put into place based on the feedback received from citizens. Mann said, “Property owners also believe that much higher amount of tax is levied on their properties and hence they choose not to pay the property tax.” This had been a main complaint among many property owners and therefore the property tax collection process was being hampered.Mann also said, “This scheme will benefit four types of property owners – ex-parte assessment under old rateable value system; rateable value already determined on merit; unit area method and those whose cases are pending in courts and are willing to resolve them out of court.”This is the first property settlement scheme that had been brought about for the Unit Area System cases. The Unit Area System was introduced in 2004. The new scheme will also allow the deposition of other pending property tax.
