PMC Approves 6% Hike in Property Tax

pune-buildingsPune: On Monday 6% hike in property tax rate has been approved by the general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The civic administration had earlier proposed a tax hike of 8% for 2013-14 and forwarded it to the standing committee. The committee has finalized a hike of 6%.The PMC is of the opinion that increasing cost of developmental projects and expenditure on providing basic civic amenities such as water supply and sewage treatment has made the increase in taxes inevitable. Different quarters have supported the tax hike on the basis this fact. Some feel the tax hike is fair enough as there had been no increase in taxes in the last 4 years and it would not be much of a burden on citizens.Property tax is crucial for the PMC as it is one of the main sources of revenue. Property tax is levied on residential, commercial and other types of private and government properties within the PMC limit. Property tax is charged on real properties such as land buildings or permanent improvements. The PMC assesses residential and commercial properties in the city and based on this assessment tax is to be paid by property owners. There are around 6 lakh residential, 75,000 non-residential and 24,000 open plots. A special discount will be offered to those who will pay their taxes before May 31. The hike will enable the PMC will be collect additional revenue amounting to Rs 40 crore this year.
