Chinese Fishing Nets, Fort Kochi. The Chinese fishing nets (Cheenavala) were believed to be made by the traders from the court of Chinese rulers but recent studies have suggested that the nets have been introduced by Portuguese Casado settlers from Macau. These giant nets serve many fishermen their livelihood. Kochi is the only place outside China where you can find this variety of fishing nets.
Fort Kochi Beach. A beach that will touch your heart with its serene beauty at the sunset. Fort Kochi beach will make you sit there for your whole life. Adding to joy, the kiosks with fresh fishes and other traditional cuisines, the beach is a treat of life.
St. Francis church, Fort Kochi. The oldest church built by Europeans in India. It served as the initial burial place for Vasco da Gama, later the remains were taken to Portugal. Still the marked spot of the burial place can be seen and attracts many tourists.
Santa Cruz Basilica, Fort Kochi. Originally built by Portuguese in 1505 and named as a cathedral in 1558. The British colonists destroyed it in 1795. The current structure was built in 1905 and raised to the status of a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
Cherai Beach. Located on the north end of Vypeen Island, Cherai beach is around 25 km from Kochi. Stretched along 15 long kilometers, its white sand, blue water and the scenic beauty of coconut groves make this beach a must see place around Kochi. It is also a favorite picnic spot and a candy for beach-lovers.
Dutch Palace (Mattancherry Palace), Mattancherry. Originally built by Portuguese but modified by the Dutch and presented to the king of Kochi. A place of coronation of many kings of Kochi, Dutch Palace has a fine collection of mural paintings reflecting scenes from the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Hill Palace, Tripunithura. Located at Tripunithura, 16 km from Kochi, Hill Palace was built in 19th century by the Raja of Kochi and has served as their kingdom for many years. Now it is a museum which displays the lifestyle of the kings as well as other archaeological objects of value.
Jewish Synagogue and Jew Town, Mattancherry. Decorated with Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers, this Jewish place of worship was built in 1568. Giant scrolls of Old Testament can be found here.
Museum of Kerala History, Kalamassery. This museum displays the history and culture of Kerala with life size statues and paintings.Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary. Home for many rare migratory and resident birds, Mangalavanam is a protected bird sanctuary. It is located near the High court of Kerala.Bolghatty Palace, Bolghatty Island. A short boat ride from the mainland and you are at the Bolghatty Palace. Converted into a hotel by Kerala tourism Department Corporation (KTDC), the island has a mini golf course and entertains you with its panoramic views of port and harbors.Marine Drive. A pathway with the view of backwaters, fishing boats, speed boats, ships, tankers and passenger boats. A nice place to spend the evening.Willingdon Island. Home for the Cochin Port and the headquarters of Southern Naval Command, this man-made island was created in 1933 under the direction of Sir Robert Bristow.
