It was built in the year 1994 but the ground activity started in the year 1992. It was opened in 1995. When it was decided that the 2008 Common wealth Youth Games will be held here then Government started face lifting it and made it a class to facilitate games here. The Indian Olympic Association is the current operator of the stadium. The stadium surface is mainly of grass and concrete. The current capacity of the stadium is 20000. The stadium is very conveniently located in Balewadi area touching the Pune –Mumbai highway and easily approachable from Mumbai too in three hours. It is just 7 kilometers away from Rajiv Gandhi InfoTech Park, Hinjewadi. From the main city it is 13 kilometers away. It was built for the National Games in the year 1994 that were hosted by Pune. 2008 Common Wealth Games had made it very popular among the youth in Pune.This stadium comprises of the following sections: Athletics Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Badminton Hall, Basketball Section, Boxing Arena, Shooting Range, Tennis Court, Table Tennis Hall, Weightlifting Hall, Wrestling Hall, Velodrome (the only Veldrome in India), Games Village, etc. The games Village which is a non playing area consists of 400 rooms at the standard of three star and five star facilities.The major tournaments held here includes the National Games in the year 1994, The Common Wealth Youth Games in 2008, the World Junior Tennis Circuit in 2008, FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship in 2009 (winner Brazil), FIBA Asia Under – 16 Championship for Women in 2009. The Roll Ball World Championship is held in 2011. There are various classes held here throughout the year for learners.The other stadium that is getting a facelift is Pimpri Hockey stadium which is situated in Pimpry Chinchwad area. The full name of this stadium is The Major Dhyanchand Hockey Stadium which is the first poly grass stadium in the district Pune. It was built in the year 1993 with an investment of rupees 1.15 crore and a seating capacity of 5000. During the National Games in 1993 various Women Hockey Matches held here. Various matches at school level, state level and National level were held here at different times.Recently Government has sanctioned rupees 2.75 crore for the renovation of this stadium ahead of the World Series Hockey (WSH) Matches. These matches will start on December 17th and the work is expected to complete on or before 15th December. There will be live telecast of these matches in 40 countries and it is good news for the stadium as well as for hockey lovers. The renovation plan will include high mast floodlights with a capacity of 1200 lux. The renovation in the infrastructure will become an asset to the stadium for long run and will attract as a suitable venue for more games to be held in future.
