The city of Surat seems to be unaffected by the slump in the real estate sector. Real estate developers of this city continue to deliver new residential projects, despite of the recession. As compared to last two years, the constructions plans have increased drastically. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), in this fiscal year, till March 20, 2014 has already approved 680 construction plans which is almost double than the total approvals of last 3 years.The total approvals for new constructions given by SMC Town Planning (TP) department in the year 2010-11 were 278. In 2011-12, the approvals increased to 472 and by 2012-13, the civic body approved 677 construction plans. But this year, just till March the approval count is 680, the count is likely to cross 700 by the end of this financial year.In localities such as Varacha, Athwa and Rander, the new area development procedure is already going on in a rapid pace. The official of the TP department said that this is the reason why more and more developers are showing their interest for construction in these localities.According to the civic body’s Director of planning, Surat is developing rapidly, hence the side-effects of real estate slump cannot be seen here as compared to other cities.
