Mumbai: BMC will issues certificate of occupancy for the residents living in the dilapidated structures so that they can easily vacate their societies before BMC can raze these structures. The decision to issue occupancy certificate to these dilapidated structures was taken to ensure residents about their ownership of these structures as a security.BMC officials will note down all the owners and residents living in the structures before razing the complete building. The certificate will consist names of the people living in the building along with photograph of the building and it will be signed by the assistant commissioner of the ward.The system is already came into force in P (north) ward in Malad and M (east) ward in Chembur. The certificate issued will ensure that when the new structure stands up after the demolition of dilapidated structure, the rightful owners will get their p-lace in the new structure.The residents in private societies were reluctant to vacate their flats although they were issued demolition notices. After considering the issues of residents here the BMC came up with a plan to provide occupancy certificate to people living in the societies.BMC attempt to vacate the buildings with the help of the police as numerous issues can be raised by residents while demolishing the buildings. Mumbai has about 593 dilapidated buildings out of which only 125 private buildings and 41 municipal buildings have been vacated as a precaution.BMC measures the carpet areas in presence of the residents; it ensures that they are the actual occupants of the buildings.
