BMC to Pay Rs 18 Crore as Interest on Property Tax Refund

property-tax-bmcMumbai: The BMC officials delay has resulted into extra payment of Rs 18 crore as interest as BMC failed to refund the extra money which was paid by citizens as property tax. The payment of Rs 18 crore was the result of BMC officials’ tardiness in providing refunds to the citizens.The BMC stated that over 85,000 Mumbaikars are eligible for the refund of about Rs 898 crore. These citizens received their final property bills generated under the new capital value-based system and they received these bills in 2013. These bills were actually lower than their provisional bills which were calculated according to the rateable value system.The BMC has a provision in the rules that the BMC would pay 6.15 per cent interest on the refund amounts. The official delay in the process resulted into an increased interest amount which further accounted to Rs. 17.70 crore.The BMC has received refund claims worth Rs 300.91 crore and interest on these claims is accounted to Rs 17.70 crore. Civic official announced that these interests will most likely be adjusted in the final bill or might be sent to property owners.The amount of refund varies with every property owners. According to the civic body officials, about 39,000 out of 85,000 cases will get refund of less than Rs 1000 each.Earlier, property taxes were calculated by the rateable value system. The values calculated are through the maximum rent amount that can be fetched by the property in a year.
