Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to give property tax benefits to upcoming technology (IT) industries in the city. The decision of providing tax benefits to new companies was taken by the standing committee of Pune Municipal Corporation.The Proposal for the decision stated that the new IT companies which will come up in the city can pay property tax based on residential rates. The state authority had given tax benefits to many IT companies during the period from 2003 to 2008 which benefited about 699 companies during this period. Further the state authorities also extended the period of benefit up to August 2014.The opposition claimed that the decision of giving property tax benefit to companies is biased and it will be injustice to about 154 old IT companies in the city. Although earlier state government had provided extensions to companies, no formalities were carried out regarding the extension by the civic authorities and now the extension period is on the verge of end.Many members of the committee opposed the decision of providing tax benefits to new IT companies, few said that the decisions is taken to safeguard commercial interests of few companies and it is in favor of few new companies.In last four year’s period about 154 companies had registered with civic administration in the city and they will have to pay property tax in Pune at commercial rates.
