casa-da-musica-mainThe architectural world has always been dominated by the traditional “shoe-box” architecture, but Casa Da Música was an attempt to break out the traditional bonds and coming up with new contemporary structure to reinvigorate the traditional concert hall in another way. The structure of Casa Da Música was built as part of Porto’s project for European Culture Capital in 2001 which took four years to complete the project but the unusual structure and design of the project gave it an immediate recognition across the globe. The Casa Da Música houses the cultural institution of the same name along with three orchestras named as Orquestra Nacional do Porto, Orquestra Barroca and Remix Ensemble. The structure is designed by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The structure build with an estimated cost of €100M, was inaugurated on 15 April 2005 by the Portuguese president with an opening day concert.casa-da-musicaArchitecture and DesignArchitectures and designers working on the project decided to go with a contemporary designing instead of creating unusual architecture to make it look like unusual than the normal structures. The structure is developed adjacent to the city’s main business centre, Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque; well know as Rotunda da Boavista. The structure has very distinctive façade developed with white concrete providing iconic structure to the overall structure of the hall. The concept of the building was to create a solitary structure standing on a travertine-paved plateau surrounding the working class area of the business centre. Koolhaas’s design of the structure, Casa Da Música, is a perfect example of the structure packed with urban styles which energizes the overall atmosphere of the city. The unusual form of the structure initially raised thousands of people’s eyes as it resembles a lot like a house built upside down. Although building’s concrete form resting on a carpet of polished makes it very attractive, but the structure has made its name in many records due to its contemporary styling and designing.Casa-Da-Musica-interiorInside the Casa Da MúsicaThe structure houses elevated 1300-seat grand Auditorium having glass facades completely dedicated to the performances which is conceived as a simple hollow structure like the usual auditorium but it possesses the shape of shoe-box like the traditional structures. The Casa Da Música also houses smaller and flexible performance space, along with ten rehearsal rooms, recording studios, educational areas, restaurants, bars, VIP room etc. The structure also has a huge parking space which can house as much as 600 vehicles at once.Designer have innovatively used materials and colors throughout the structure, along with exclusive glass walls resembling the curtains and walls of the structure are embossed in gold with a different perspective. The whole inside structure is connected by the Public routes connecting every possible space of the structure. The whole inside structure of the Cas Da Música is nothing but a great architectural adventure with an essence of music and art.The building’s design has been highly acclaimed worldwide and it has been classified as the most attractive project amongst the work done by Rem Koolhaas has ever created. Many critics have acclaimed the structure saying it is one of the few buildings in the world which have great balance of intellectual ardor and sensual beauty.
