The Leaning Tower of Pisa was said to be a remarkable slanting building but now this wonder of the world has got a tough contender that leans five times more than it. Capital Gate of Abu Dhabi is an iconic superstructure that leans at 18 degrees and known to be the furthest-leaning building till date. Though the Leaning Tower of Pisa must have accidentally got that tilt but this intentional leaning Capital Gate tower has entered the Guinness Books of Records and was certified as the furthest-leaning man-made structure in June 2010. Apart from the sloping form, the funnel shape that widens as it spirals and upwards and outwards also makes this edifice a unique and dramatic. Capital Gate is the home to the renowned five- star, Hyatt Hotel and also boasts 15,000 sq mts of premium commercial space. The 35 storey tower is owned and developed by Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre Group and was wonderfully designed by the known architecture company Robert Matthew Johnson Marshal. The project construction started in 2007 and was developed in various stages and got completed by 2011. Architecture of this outstanding building:The intentional tilted shape has been achieved after lot of deliberation and efforts. Around 520 feet tall, Capital Gate is the first building in the globe to use pre-cambered core with a built-in slope of 350 millimeters which has been intended to straighten with addition of each floor. On its official website, it states, ‘designed to provide no symmetry.’ The extraordinary design of the building has led to different size and shape rooms with floor to ceiling windows that offers panoramic view of the city. As the exterior of the tower is awe-inspiring even the internal area is quite exceptional. The futuristic design developed with over 10,000 tons of steel has light filters downward from the skylight roof which creates a tranquil environment. Another unique feature of the building is the post-tensioned core with vertical cables. It is tensioned from one side that counteracts the tilt on the other side. The cables are arranged vertically which overlap each other every seven floors. The most noticeable feature of this architecture is the ‘splash’ which curls around the tower towards south to protect the tilting building from direct sunlight.
