National Highway Authority to Construct 130-Meter Bridge over NH-204

NHAI-kolhapurKolhapur: The National Highway Authority has sent a proposal estimating the cost of the parallel bridge to existing Shivaji Bridge on Panchaganga River. The authority will most likely start the construction of the bridge from next week. The department proposed a cost of about 13-5 crore to the central government which includes the cost overrun during the construction period of the bridge.The authority recently analyzed the project site and declared it as a perfect for construction according to the Strata analysis. Executive engineer of national highway authority division said that the examination of stone layers in the construction area has also been done and the work will be started from the next week.The proposed bridge will help transportation between Kolhapur and Konkan, eventually it will reduce the strain over the existing Shivaji Bridge. The traffic over this bridge has been increased which leads to traffic congestions and bottlenecks during traffic hours.Central government has given green nod to proposed bridge, which will be 130 meters in length. The existing Shivaji Bridge was constructed in 1878 and the proposed bridge will be built exactly parallel to the existing Shivaji Bridge.The earlier estimated cost of the bridge was Rs 9.55 crore but when the cost overrun due to the future perspectives is considered, the estimated cost increased to Rs 13.5 crore. The authority said that the construction of the bridge will be completed in the coming two years.
