For the weekend getaway from Mumbai you can choose the beautiful green town and a municipal council under Thane District of Maharashtra known as Palghar. This small town is located just 87 kilometres away from the island city of Mumbai and can be easily reached by Mumbai Ahmedabad National Highway (NH 8). After Virar, Palghar is the major Railway Junction on Western Line. Though it is a small town but it has everything one would need to live comfortably like shopping centres, schools, colleges, hospitals, restaurants, etc. the green surroundings of the place makes it a perfect getaway. Palghar has an area in its territory known as Panchbatti (five lights) which is named in the honor of five young men who were shot dead by British soldiers on 14th August 1942 while leading a morcha of Quit India Movement. This fall is usually seen in its full youth after monsoon as in summer it gets dried up. People can be seen enjoying at the fall during and after monsoon. The Vaghoba Fall is situated at Manor Road.4. Shirgaon Fort – This historic fort situated at one side of Shirgaon beach is easily reachable from Palghar. It served the great king Shivaji to keep an eye on the enemies coming from the sea front. Though some part of the fort are now in ruins but still can be explored to revive past memories of Maratha Empire.5. Shirgaon Beach – It is another unexplored beach near Palghar. It is less frequented by tourists. This picturesque beach has breathtaking surroundings as the beach is blessed by beautiful palm trees. Fishing community live near the beach.6. Kelva Dam – It is situated near Palghar and was built to meet the irrigation needs of Palghar’s grass farming. The surroundings of the dam are extremely panoramic and worth enjoying.7. Kelva Fort – Portuguese built this fort in sixteenth century at the south end of Kelva Lake. This fort was used by Shivaji Maharaj when the place came under his rule.8. Devkop Lake – This serene lake is surrounded by lush green palm and coconut trees. The lake provides cool and calm atmosphere to the visitors.9. Manor – Located on the Vaitarna River banks it is a popular tourists’ destination near Palghar. This natural place is totally unpolluted and famous for its earthenware and such other products.10. Apart from these destinations one can also visit Mahim Beach, Satpati Beach and Ram Temple at Palghar.
