KMC to Carry Out General Revaluation to Amplify Property Tax Revenue

kol-prop-taxKolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be notifying property taxpayers for General Revaluation (GR). The general revaluation is an effort by the civic body to increase the revenue by revaluating the properties whose tax amounts had remained unchanged for the last six years. KMC has already sent Property Information Form (PIF) to property owners of 18 wards of Kolkata.The KMC assessment department admitted that in some wards where general revaluation of properties should be held at the intervals of 6 years, no such action had been taken in even the past 12 years. One official said, “We are calculating the number of households based on the GR last done on these properties. We will send GR notices accordingly. “Response to the PIF had been variable in different regions. While property owners in some places have responded openly and immediately, property owners in many other places have remained non responsive about their properties in answer to the PIF scheme. “We have got useful information from a section of property owners from 18 wards where we had sent PIF. We hope to augment revenue from commercial properties in a few wards based on the feedback from the owners. At the same time, we have noticed that most taxpayers in these wards have not responded to our appeal of self-assessment,” said an official.On a whole in the two months that lapsed after the sending out of eth PIF only 10% of property owners in the 18 wards had responded to send feedbacks. Among the property owners who have responded there are several commercial property owners from Ballygunge, Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat, Dhakuria and Jodhpur Park. Bhaskar Ghosh, the chief manager of the revenue department said, “We will benefit from the information as our revenue will get a boost because of the self-assessment by the owners of these commercial properties.”For those who have not responded to the PIF, KMC will be sending out inspectors to evaluate the present status of the properties.
