Surat: The builder and developers from Surat have decided to follow the green norms in their future developments in the city. About 30 top developers from the city have decided to come forward with this brave decision to adopt the green ways for the construction of their future projects in and around the city.The city has sanctioned about 862000 square meters of space for high rises multi storey buildings and about 576000 square meters has sanctioned for the low rise constructions since the year 2009. Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is now scrutinizing only four projects from the city for the LEED certification.IGBC gives LEED certification to the construction projects which follow mentioned green regulation while constructing the project. IGBC decided to start the certification process for Surat in accordance with South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries. This local green building authority will help IGBC to spread awareness in developers and will serve as a catalyst to make city’s real estate more green oriented.Surat Builders Association (SBA) stated that using green norms in the development will increase the project cost by about 10 per cent but the green buildings have more futuristic benefits and it helps to save energy.Sanjay Panjabi of SGCCI welcomed the decision of builders saying that by following green regulation for the construction of projects, developers will help to reduce the energy used in the construction business of the city.
