It connects 4 prime metropolitan cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai which forms a quadrilateral shape; hence the project is named Golden Quadrilateral. It is the largest highway project in our country and is fifth longest in the world. The other prime metropolis like Bangalore, Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Kanpur are also connected by this highway network. This infrastructure project is managed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways. The first controlled- access toll road, Mumbai-Pune Expressway is part of this massive highway project though it is not subsidized by NHAI.This 4 lane highway project is spread across 5,846 km was launched in 2001 and was likely to get finished by January, 2012. According to a recent update the project is about 99% completed. The project got delayed due hurdles like land acquisition, arrangement of funds, shifting of utilities, acquiring environment and forest clearance, cash flow constraints, dispute with contractors, law and order issues in some states and other such related problems.Routes and cities connected by GQ:The Golden Quadrilateral project is divided into 4 sections or routes:Delhi to Kolkata: It connects major cities like Delhi, Faridabad, Kanpur, Allahabad, Aurangabad, Asansol, Varanasi and others.Delhi to Mumbai: It covers cities like Gurgaon, Ajmer, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat etc.Mumbai to Chennai: Vellore, Kanchipuram Bangalore, Hosur, Balgaum, Kolhapur, Karad, Pune, Panvel are some of the cities connected by this route.Kolkata to Chennai: Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Vijayawada, Guntur, Nellore, Guudur are few cities connected by this section.Only National Highways are used in this colossal infrastructure project.Benefits of Golden Quadrilateral:The economic and social benefits of GQ project are:
