Reliance Pauses Construction of 720,000 sq ft Alaknanda Mall

Delhi-relianceNew Delhi: Reliance Industries Limited decided to slow down its plan of constructing its Alaknanda mall situated in a residential colony in South Delhi. The upper middle class residents living in the colony were protesting against the ongoing development of the Mall.Reliance Group purchased a 4 acre plot in south Delhi’s Alaknanda area through an auction conducted by the Delhi Development Authority. The plot measuring 4 acres was purchased for the price of Rs 304 crore. Reliance is now developing six-storey mall of 720,000 sq ft area on this plot with all relevant permissions and licenses from relevant authorities.Group protesting against the construction of this mall had organized a really last month with about 1000 plus people. The group says that the proposed mall will create traffic problems as the locality comprises small roads and this will generate many problems for the residents. Citizens Alliance, protesting Group has petitioned Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit about the construction of the Mall.DDA official said that the plot was intended to be used for commercial purposes according to the Delhi’s Master plan.Reliance group has decided to opt for wait and watch strategy. Currently, company is concentrating on its other projects as it is in no hurry to complete the Alaknanda mall, but the mall was slated to be completed in 2014 according to the previously scheduled plan.Urban Designer and former head of Delhi Urban Arts Commission, KT Ravindran said that if any project affects the community then community should have the rights to represent themselves also developers should have the right to represent their views.
