Pune: According to the Environment Status Report released this week, the city of Pune has witnessed a steep hike in the number of green homes. Apart from the newer construction, existing ones are also adopting the measures to promote the cause. More and more houses in the city are turning eco-friendly like never before. The remarkable point is that in last five years the number of green properties have been multiplied with 23, taking 1265 such properties in 2008 to 23,170 in the year 2013. However the reason is not only to support sustainable development but also the property tax rebate that the government offers for adopting green measures. This year 23,170 properties got rebate in the tax after the adoption of eco-housing measures.It started in 2007-08 when the civic body initiated to educate developers, architects and buyers to increase the level of care for the city’s landscape. According to the body, if a citizen uses one eco-friendly measure, then 5 percent discount is availed. If two or more, 10 percent discount is offered. However several aspects have been checked before certifying a building as eco-friendly.The mandatory feature for considering buildings as eco friendly are rain water harvesting, water treatment system, segregated garbage collection, water meters and use of solar water heaters.
