Land records basically is a system which records all the details and information related to ownership of land, possession and other land related rights. These records can be used as evidence of title or to restrict any unlawful transaction of your land. Every state in India have specific land recording process and different terms are used for land records. In Kerala land records are also known as Ozhuku.Land records in Kerala:Kerala consists of 14 districts, 63 talukas, 21 revenue divisions and 1453 villages. The land revenue department of the state maintains land records of all the legalized lands within these areas. The land revenue department of this state exists before the independence period of our country. The land record contains information such as survey number, name and area of the property, name and address of the landholder, kind of possession and other such details. The state also possesses Vilangipper records that contain additional details about the Ozhukus. All the landholders were given a patta that stated the tax imposed on each item of the land. The survey and land records department in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) is responsible for conducting land survey operations and updating of land records. It is one of the oldest land revenue departments of the state. The farmers or the owners of the land can check their land records in the any survey or land record office.Major functions of the land revenue department:

- Transfer of government lands between departments

Digitized land record method:The government of Kerala has also launched an ambitious project called ‘Bhoomi Keralam’ that will allow to acquire the land records in digitized form i.e. through software. The land records will be permanently available on their web page – bhoomi.kerala.gov.in for trouble-free verification by the stake holders.E-Rekha is an initiative by Bhoomikeralam which offers a digital library of land records and ensure transparency in land transactions for the convenience of the public in Kerala.Objectives of Bhoomi Keralam project:
- The main aim of this project is to generate digital land records
- The project will allow to maintain an updated record of all the public lands
- The digital method will maintain transparency and will reduce tampering of records
- The computerized method will maintain the land records in a secured manner
- Will allow online registration and online mutation
