Mani Bhavan – Reflector of India’s Freedom Struggle

Mani-BhavanWhile talking about the historic places of island city of Mumbai one place we can never forget and it is Mani Bhavan. This Bhavan is actually a remembrance of Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi as it used to be his residence while in Mumbai city. Mani Bhavan which is a museum today dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi is a two storey Guajarati style building situated at Laburnum Road in Gamdevi grounds of Downtown area of Mumbai city. Gandhi ji made his frequent visits to Mumbai city between 1917 and 1934 and during this period he stayed at this Mani Bhavan and conducted several important political activities from here only. The building was initially owned by Mani Family who was close friend and host of Gandhi ji while he was in Mumbai. Later on the building was owned by Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri. This place can be considered the headquarters of Gandhiji’s political activities in Mumbai. you may be surprised to know that it was this mansion from where some of the most significant movements of freedom against British were initiated like Non-cooperation movement, Satyagraha, Swadeshi Movement, Khadi Movement, Khilafat Movement, etc.Eight years after Gandhi ji died this mansion came under management of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi so that they can preserve this place and can turn it into a memorial of Father of Nation. Since 1955 this place is a museum showcasing the articles, books, films, speeches, pictures and other items associated to Mahatma Gandhi. Just 40 minutes drive from Taj Hotel this memorial is a paradise for Gandhi followers and admirers as you get to explore the life of a great personality of India. for almost seventeen years this place was frequented by Gandhi ji who loved the nation as his own family and tried hard to get his family what they deserved, the freedom in a non violence way. From the year 1917 his association with Charkha (the thread spinning wheel) started at Mani Bhavan. His Home Rule Movement also started from this place. He also refrained from drinking cow’s milk due to the cruelty involved in the process while staying at this place.After entering the building you get to see the library first. This library houses more than 20000 books, periodicals, recordings for reference as well as for borrowings. Here in the library there is a statue of Mahatma Gandhi seeing which you can remember the kind gesture on his face for one and all. From here you can climb the stairs that leads you to the first floor of the mansion. Through the steps you can see the various pictures of Gandhi ji portraying his life. After reaching the first floor you get the opportunity to explore the photo gallery which houses pictures of Mahatma Gandhi starting from his childhood till his day of Assassination that brings tears to your eyes as a legendry personality who loved the entire country as his own family breathes his last.Along with these rare pictures that present entire life of Bapu in front of your eyes you can also find various press clippings published in connection with the acts of Bapu (Gandhi ji). There is an auditorium displaying films based on Gandhi ji. You can also hear the recorded speeches that are played in this auditorium. You may not know that this auditorium is also used for seminars, discussions for schools and colleges. When you climb to the second floor you get a chance to explore the room where he stayed while being in here. This small room is neatly preserved with some of his belongings. A glass partition is made through which one can see his two spinning wheels (charkhas), a book and a floor bed still intact.There is a small room attached to the living room of Bapu. This room has a wonderful exhibit of small figures depicting his political life and the freedom struggle of India created by Smt. Sushila Patel. There is a hall situated opposite to the room. In this hall various photographs, posters, slogans and paintings are exhibited associated to his life. On the terrace of the building Gandhi ji used to pray and sleep. This is the place where Gandhi ji was arrested on 4th January 1932. A bronze inscription placed here gives the detail of the day.
