Flora Fountain – An Iconic Architectural Heritage

Flora Fountain is one significant heritage structure standing for more than a century at the south end of historic Ddabhai Naroji of Fort Business District in the centre of South Mumbai. The Dadabhai Naroji Road is also called Mile Long Road. The Flora Fountain is actually a structure beautifully carved in stone in order to give it a special appearance. Thus you can say it is a sculpture, a water fountain and an architectural monument. It was built in the year 1864 by Agri- Horticultural Society of Western India with a total cost of Rs. 47000 which was a princely amount at that time. Out of this Rs. 47000, Rs. 20000 were donated by Cursetjee Fardoonjee Parekh. The place where the fountain is created is also known as Hutatma Chowk (Martyr’s Square). This name is given to the place in order to honour hundred and five members of Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti. These members lost their lives in fighting for the separation of Maharashtra state.The Flora Fountain portrays the Roman Goddess Flora who is said to be the goddess of flowers which means prosperity and beauty. The statue of Flora Goddess is placed at the top of the structure giving it an amazing look. Built completely in Portland stone and painted with white oil paint from outside this ornamentally sculpted structure depicts the Neo classical and Gothic revival style of architecture. The architect who designed the structure was Richard Norman Shaw while the engineer was James Forsythe. Initially it was thought that the fountain should be named after the Governor of Bombay, Sir Bartle Frere, but Flora Fountain name was better suited thus the later name was decided just before the structure was inaugurated. The fountain looks more stunning in the night when it is illuminated with lights.The surrounding of Flora Fountain is prestigious commercial hub of Mumbai as it houses Bombay University, Bombay Stock Exchange, Gateway of India, etc. the place where the fountain is standing today was the spot where the Churchgate of Bombay Fort once was. The surrounding areas do offer some shopping opportunities as there are many small and big local shops around. This place is quite a significant tourists’ spot in the city of Mumbai and does have a place in the list of World Heritage list.AccessibilityIt is easy to reach here as the location is in the middle of the South Mumbai. The closest rail head is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal. One can come here by using state run buses, auto rickshaw or hire taxi. MTDC open air buses run by government are another option to explore the beauty of the fountain.
