Among the many holy shrines of lord Ganesha Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is the most significant in terms of its popularity among people from all income groups. As the name suggests this temple is dedicated to lord Ganesha who is a Hindu god and the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This temple is located at Prabhadevi area of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. The current temple is the renovated form of the original shrine which was built in the year 1801 on November 19th by the contractor Laxman Vithu and funded by rich Agri women Deubai Patil who was childless but wanted the lord to help such women by granting them their wishes. The actual structure that was built in 1801 was a 3.6 m x 3.6 m small square structure with a dome shaped brick Shikhar. A disciple of Swami Samarth buried two celestial idols in the premises just in front of the deity. After twenty one years a tree of Mandar came up from that place. The branches of the tree have an image of Swayambhu Ganesha which is quite spiritual for the devotees of Lord Ganesha. In India if people have faith in a road side stone it becomes god for them and fulfils wishes. The current temple is quite grand with multiple storeys and white washed with beautifully carved domes and multiple small and one big golden shikhara. The area of temple complex is 2550 square metres. It has two Deepmalas each of 3.6 m in size, rest house and some living chambers for care takers of the temple to live in. There used to be a small lake of 30 x 40 sq m close to the temple created by Nardulla in early nineteenth century in order to meet water requirements but later on it was it was demolished and the land was sold. There is small shrine of Hanuman in the premises. It was built in the mid twentieth century in the year 1952 because an image of Hanuman was discovered while road extension programme. The temple has a small hall known as Mandap which houses the sanctum of Siddhi Vinayak. The doors of the sanctum are made with wood and images of Ashtvinayak are intricately carved on the doors. Ashtvnayaka is actually the eight different forms or appearances of lord Ganesha as popular in Maharashtra state. The roof of the sanctum is having gold plating work. The main deity in the sanctum is Lord Ganesha. All of a sudden in the late twentieth century the temple became very popular among people of Mumbai and even entire country. Rich and poor all come here to get the blessings of Lord Ganesha with the faith that he will grant their wishes. No religion boundaries are there at the place of God and anyone is allowed to visit the shrine. This temple is one of the richest temples in the city with yearly donations of Rs. 100 to 150 million. I personally feel that if you have so much by the grace of god then you should use it for humanity purpose instead of putting it into the god’s home as God doesn’t need your money but your devotion. The managing trust of temple is in controversy for not properly using the funds collected by donation. Even the family whose ancestors built the original temple are living a life of despair near the temple. Actually god is a faith and you cannot purchase god’s favour by donating money to its shrines.I believe in the faith of God and the place is filled with hundreds of devotees all the time to get the blessings and to fulfil their wishes. If you are honest to the faith of god you must pay a visit to this place with pure heart not with favours from god.
