While exploring Delhi you should not miss one of the most beautiful, historic and upscale place of Delhi known as Hauz Khas Village which is located at the southern part of Delhi. You must be wondering if you are not a Muslim what these words mean. Actually Hauz Khas are Urdu language words. In Urdu Hauz means water tank while Khas means Royal thus Hauz Khas means Royal Water Tank. This place has a big water reservoir built by Allauddin Khilji (1296–1316 Khilji Dynasty) in order to fulfil the water requirements of Siri inhabitants during late thirteenth century. This water tank was a part of the second medieval city of Delhi Sultanate, Siri. This place is famous for its historic monuments, the royal water tank, Islamic Seminary, mosque, tomb and various pavilions. The monuments are built using red sandstone and marble. These structures surround a village that is quite urbanised today. This royal Tank was re excavated by another Muslim ruler named Firoz shah Tuglaq (1351- 1388). He actually revived a dying water reservoir by clearing its entire clogged inlet channels. He was a person with deep architectural interest and thus he built several architectural monuments here and in other parts of Delhi. At Hauz Khas he built a mosque, madrasa, tombs, etc. All these structures look very simple in appearance with lack of decoration but still standing for centuries. This place represents the Muslim royalty during fourteenth to sixteenth century in Delhi. The historic monuments created by Firoz Shah Tuglaq between 1352 to 1354 AD on the Eastern and western side of water reservoir are as follows:
- Madrasa (Islamic school)
- A mosque
- A main tomb for himself at the intersection of L shaped building
- Six domed Pavilions
The architectural style here is purely Indo Islamic and the architect was Malik Ghazi Shahna. The village here was developed in the 1980s as an upmarket area with high class residential and commercial developments that are seen over the years. Currently it is an expensive upscale area of Tourists’ interest in South Delhi with several upmarket art galleries, fashion boutiques, restaurants, garden, etc. The swans and ducks swimming in the Hauz Khas Lake seem quite inviting for the visitors. There is a deer park worth exploring and relaxing at the entrance of the water tank. At this park one can enjoy the serene greenery along with spectacular landscaping. Here you can spot spotted deer, peacocks, rabbits, guinea pigs apart from variety of different birds flying around the lake. The tourism department is in process of establishing a night bazaar here.
