National Rail Museum in New Delhi: Fascinating Collection of Preserved Historical Indian Locomotives

Let us add to their joy by taking them to a place that interest and excite them like a museum of railways. I personally prefer railways over airways as while on a train you get to explore thousands of things that is not at all possible in an airplane. Apart from this railways are more comfortable and enjoyable than other modes of transport in the world. I am sure kids would love take a dip into the history of Railways at the National Rail Museum in New Delhi. This museum is located at the southern part of Delhi in Chanakyapuri Area of New Delhi. The museum exhibits an interesting and exotic collection of more than hundred life sized Indian railways dating back to hundred and forty years. Isn’t it amazing to explore this fascinating history of one of the most important modes of transport in India? Now let me tell you that you can explore here the static rail models, working rail models, rail cabin antique furniture, historical photographs, literature related to Indian railways, different types of locomotives, various signalling equipments, various notable old coaches, etc.Being one of the most visited tourists’ attractions of Delhi this museum is equally popular among all age groups. Spread over an area of 10 acres or 40000 sq m the Rail Museum was established on 1st February 1957 by Architect M. G. Satto. Now this unique museum is our National Heritage. It has on display the model of first ever train of India, a steam engine which travelled from Mumbai to Thane in the year 1953. There are several other locomotives kept inside and outside exhibits are just irresistible. There is a toy train that offers tour around the museum. Some of the special collection at the museum of different locomotives is as follows:

  • Patiala State Monorail Train – built in 1907 it is an unusual steam monorail based on Ewing System that travelled between Bassi and Sirhind. It had only single track.
  • Another rail on display is Fairy Queen which is the oldest working steam engine in the world. (1885)
  • Morris Fire Engine is also in the exhibits. It was built in the year 1914 by fire engineers M/S. John Morris and sons Ltd of Manchester.
  • Saloon of Prince of Wales specially created for Prince of Wales to travel when he visited India. (1875)
  • Saloon of Maharaja of Indore used by Maharaja Holkar of Indore.
  • Saloon of Maharaja of Mysore built using gold, ivory, teak for the personal use of Mysore Maharaja. (1899)
  • Saloon of Maharaja of Baroda (1886)
  • The Vice regal Dining Car (1889)
  • Electric Locomotive Sir Leslie Wilson – it was the first generation electric engine of India.
  • Electric Locomotive Sir Roger Lumley (1930)
  • Beyer Garratt 6594 engine
  • Crane Tank
  • Kalka Shimla Rail Bus
  • Matheran Rail coach no. 8899

There is a shop here from where you can buy a souvenir of Rail Museum. Apart from souvenirs various beautiful Tibetan handicraft items can also be purchased. There is a restaurant and a library is also there in the Museum Premises.
