Gurgaon: Special Economic Zones were introduced in Gurgaon in year 2006 with approval of 52 SEZs for the region. Main aim behind this was to promote and establish big township containing industries and commercial projects. According to the government of India, out of these 52 approved SEZs only 3 SEZs have managed to become operational till June 2012.Investors are afraid of investing in the SEZs in Gurgaon, main reason behind the inactive SEZs in Gurgaon is the IT sector is going through the meltdown hence the SEZs were remained inactive as they were made following the growth of the IT sector in past few years. Decades ago builders and developers which got their share in SEZs are now running away from the SEZs.Disputes between developers and the state government over the SEZs are well known and it is affecting the SEZs. The government is issuing licenses to the industrial colonies which will allow developers to use land for industrial, commercial and residential use of the SEZ land. The government is hoping that this decision will improve the situation of the SEZs in Gurgaon. The infrastructure has been already completed in most of the SEZs, but developers are unable to capture customers for the properties hence they are turning properties for industrial sector so developers are asking for the permission to do so. The government is going to grant the permission to turn these properties for industrial as well as residential use.The government is trying hard to make these SEZs operational but no new ventures or projects were observed here since the past seven years. Turning SEZs for residential and industrial development might help to improve the situation.
