Gujarat Government Undertakes Slum Redevelopment Policy

gujarat-housingGandhinagar: The Gujarat government has undertaken a project to redevelop the Gandhinagar slums. The project was first initiated in 2010 based on the help of the private sector, but it proved to be a failure. Now in 2013 the process is to be reinitiated.The proposal of the Slum Development Policy 2013 was finalized in a meeting of ministers on 9th May. The meeting was chaired by Urban Development Minister Anandiben Patel. This time both the private and public sectors will be made involved in the development of the urban slums and will be given special incentives for participation.The government is on the final step of negotiations with for private developers. Private developers will be allowed incentives besides receiving subsidy. As an incentive they will be offered greater FSI (floor space index). They will also be offered land at concessional rates and the government may link the slum development policy with the proposed affordable housing policy.”Municipal corporations, municipalities and Gujarat Housing Board have been instructed to provide houses to all below-poverty-line (BPL) families in urban areas. The process of systematic planning and land acquisition is over. The poor will get two-BHK flats, with 36 sq m built up area, at the very place they currently live.” Declares an official.The Gujarat government plans to build 50 lakh pucca houses all over the state over the next 5 years, which are to including 28 lakh rural area dwellings. The slum redevelopment will provide housing to 7.5 lakh urban slum dwellers. Most of these dwellers are from the economically weaker sections whose annual income is lower than Rs 1 lakh.
