Kolkata is known as city of joy and festivals. It is proved with the fact that there are several religions are smoothly living united here. Today I am taking you to one of the finest Jain religious place that is spreading its spirituality since 1867. The name of this worship place is Kolkata Jain Temple and alternatively it is called Parashnath Temple. It is located at the Badridas Temple Street in the Northeast part of city. It was created by Seth Badridas Bahadur who was a Marwari Shrimal Jain and an art connoisseur in the year 1867. Shri Kalyansurishwarji Maharaj performed the ritual of Pran Pratishta of the temple. The spectacular structure of temple is currently counts among the major tourists’ destinations. The temple is dedicated to the twenty third tirthankara of Jains known as Bhagwan Parashnath. This temple is one of the most important worship places of Jains in Kolkata. The temple a premise is actually has four parts and each part has one temple. There is a Shitalnath ji Temple where the main deity is the tenth Tirthankara of Jains, Shitalnath Bhagwan. Lord Shitalnathji’s image is situated in the sanctum sanctorum. His forehead hasa Diamond and that makes the image very attractive. You may be surprised to know that an akhand lamp is burning inside the sanctum sanctorum since the inception of the temple. Isn’t it amazing? This lamp is nonstop lighting for almost one and a half centuries. This Akhand lamp is a silent witness of all changes that our country and its people went through since 1867. The second temple is dedicated to the eighth Tirthankara called Chandraprabhu Swami Bhagwan. This temple is known as Chandraprabhu ji Temple. The third shrine has main deity Mahavir Swami who is the twenty fourth and the last tirthankara of Jains. It is known as Mahavir Swami Temple. The last temple in the complex is Dadawadi which has the footprints of Jain Acharya Jindutt Kushal Suriji Maharaj.From early morning you can see the devotees doing poojas in clean white clothes in the temple. You can imagine the popularity of this place among Jain folk by the fact that people come here from different parts of not only the state but the country to offer their prayers and worship in this temple throughout the year. The entire structure is quite impressive with traditional Jain design work in white marble which displays purity and lighting chandeliers. Magnificent mirror work is done on the pillars of temple while the windows are created using stained glasses. The walls are adorned with coloured stones. The outdoors of the temple is as splendid as the interiors as beautiful European style statues are installed in the outdoor gardens. The surroundings have beautiful vibrant gardens with blooming flowers and fountains. It is beautiful sight to watch the water gushing from the fountain in rhythm. The small stream of water with flower plants on both the sides flowing through the garden adds to the serenity of the place. There is a reservoir to enhance the charm of the place. Colourful fish can be seen here actively playing in the water. The intricate decoration of interiors and exteriors of the temple gives it an impressive look. Paintings of famous painter Ganesh Muskare can be explored on the walls of the temple. The entire complex is very well maintained and kept clean keeping in mind the date of its inception.
