New Delhi: Apartments in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) Village are all set to be sold by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). There are a total number of 600 apartments to be sold and their total cost will amount to Rs 2,500 crore. But most of the apartments are being sold to government bodies, autonomous bodies, public sector undertakings and tribunals rather than private individuals and this has given rise to new controversy regarding the CWG village flats that had already underwent much controversy since the 2010 Games due to legal issues.Flats in the CWG village had initially been bought by remarkable personalities such as India’s ambassador to the US Meera Shankar and her husband Ajay Shankar (ex-DIPP secretary), danseuse Shovana Narayan, former finance secretary Ashok Kumar Jha, YC Deveshwar of ITC etc. But since it was alleged that the developers of the apartments Emaar MGF has constructed 17 apartments that deviated from the sanctioned plans, DDA refused to issue a completion certificate to these apartments and hence the 280 buyers could not move into the apartments.The DDA has a total of 711 apartments in the CWG village. Of these 333 were bought to bail out Emaar MGF in 2009. These 333 apartments costed Rs 750 crore at Rs 11,000 per sq ft. 87 of these apartments have already been sold. These were mainly bought by public sector banks and insurance companies such as State Bank of India, ONGC, Punjab & Sind Bank, Agriculture Insurance Cooperation of India and National Insurance Company. The rest are to be sold now.Private owners could hardly outbid government bodies as the minimum cost of apartments in the village amounted to Rs 25,000 per sq ft whereas in nearby projects it varied between Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000 per sq ft.
