The Municipal Corporation of Mumbai recently announced that people who own unauthorized property will have to pay threefold property tax. This change in the payment of property tax may take place in the next payment cycle.This rigid decision is based on the alteration made by the state government to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act of 1988 and other local governing organization acts passed in 2010.Property taxes are collected twice in a year, once in April and other in October, therefore the raised taxes will be charged from October 2013- March 2014, 6-month period.The Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that they have already conducted a survey and made a list of the number of illegal properties. The list will be submitted to the Supreme Court on May 7th. For a building to be authorized, also requires an occupancy certificate. You cannot legally dwell in a property without having an occupancy certificate. It is an obligatory document therefore the owners who do not have this certificate are also liable to pay the penalties.According to the list which was submitted to the Bombay High Court recently, the civic body has estimated about 15,000 unauthorized properties in Mumbai. The figures might change as the survey is still going on.
