Pune: The suggestion put forward by the civic administration to reduce the discount allowed on property tax by 5% is put on hold for some time. The Standing Committee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) decided to postpone the proposal of reducing the property tax discount. The final decision would be made after two months.Billing and collection of residential, commercial, industrial and other sectors property taxes which is owned by the government ( state or central ) or private developers is the main duty of this department. Hence property tax is one of the main sources of revenue for the civic body. The property tax is collected only from the areas that are within the PMC zone.According to the chairman of the committee, after the discussion in meeting, the Standing Committee decided to postpone the decision of declining the property tax discount by 5% offered to the citizens. Earlier, the citizens who used to pay the property tax before 31st May would get 10% discount on their property tax amount. But after the civic body decision there would be declination by 5%.Property tax is a local tax that is billed and collected by the government. Property tax is charged on properties that are either tangible or immovable such as building, land and plot. The local civic bodies evaluate the specific tax amount and based on the assessment, all the property holders who own the properties within the PMC limit has to pay the calculated tax amount. Tax is collected either annually or half-yearly.
