New Delhi: All party meeting held on yesterday signaled green to the Land Acquisition Bill which will enhance the compensation to the farmers and land owners. The Land Acquisition Bill, introduced initially on September 5, 2011 was hanging in the air for six months. After struggling with many all-party meetings, the government has finally obtained the consensus required for the passage of the bill.Although the whole “Land Acquisition Bill” act of the government was part of its social agenda for election 2014; it will be highly beneficial to the farmers in the rural areas and land owners in the urban areas. The Land Acquisition Bill states that the compensation offered to the farmers in rural areas will be four times and in urban it will be two time the previous compensations. The land acquires must have to satisfy the condition of 80% consent of land owners to acquire the particular land.In an all-party meeting, government has agreed on many demands of the opposition parties. Few of the important demands are as follows:
- BJP suggested that the land should be leased instead of acquiring it from farmers which will help farmers to keep their ownership over the lands.
- After the announcement of the bill “Land Mafia” has been on the land purchase spree, hence 50 per cent compensation must be given to original farmers whose land has been purchased after September 5, 2011.
- Tenants (people residing/living on lands) should also get benefits along with the land owners.
- The government has the power to amend the act under the provision in the bill. The CPI (M) demanded that this provision must not be misused to weaken the compensation of the farmers.
- The government should look after resettlement and rehabilitation of the farmers and land owners who completely depend on acquired land.
- The government will also provide power to states to pass their legislations regarding the limits of compensation of lands.
The final agenda of the Bill will be concluded in the meet of business advisory committees of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha on Monday. And then the government will present the final draft of the bill in the budget session of the parliament.
