Rabindra Bharti Museum in Kolkata: Once the Abode of Rabindranath Tagore, Now an Impressive Museum

Let us explore his creations in the city of Kolkata. There is a museum called Rabindranath Bharti Museum located at Girish Park in Chittranjan Avenue in Kolkata. This museum is also known as The Jorashanko Thakurbari. Jorashanko means twin Shankar. If we part the word it will come like Jora means two or jodi and shanko means Shankar or Shiva. This name is got from the twin Shiva temples situated close to this place. The building in which currently this museum is situated was actually the residence of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. He was born in this house and lived here till his last breath. His grand farther Prince Dwarkanath Tagore built this house in eighteenth century. This house is now more than two hundred and seventeen years old. The premise where the museum is located has several other buildings too.Located within the university area the museum has rich collection of the work of two people named Abanindranath and Rabindranath Tagore. This museum was founded in the year 1961 on the occasion of the birthday of Shri Rabindranath Tagore. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray was the Chief Minister of West Bengal at that time. He legally acquired the residence of Gurudev in order to establish a museum based on his work for public. On 8th May 1961 the museum finally inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of independent India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. When the museum was opened it had only forty original painting works of Rabindranath Tagore as obtained by the government of West Bengal. Several other photographs came from the National Library as permanent Loan. The museum is spread over a floor area of 3000 sq feet. The museum is a part of Rabindra Bharti University which is founded in the year 1962. The university is working for the progress of higher education in a variety of fields of Humanities and Performing Arts. If you are a literature lover and admirer of Rabindranath Tagore then you must explore the Museum which has prosperous collection of books, original paintings by Rabindranath, paintings of Bengal School & Anglo Indian Schools, manuscripts, rare photographs, personal effects, journals, tapes, discs, records and several other items connected to great personalities of nineteenth century. These include Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, Dwarkanath Tagore, etc. In the museum there is a selling counter where you can purchase printed set of cards.There are various events organised on the occasions of birth anniversaries of renowned poets like Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, Jyotiridranath, Abanindranath, Dinendranath, etc. a special celebration is organised on the first day of Baishakh month which is on 25th of the month to commemorate birthday of the great poet. The light and sound show at the museum is quite an attraction. The show basically presents the story of coming Tagores, their role in Bengal Resurgence and the various events of the life of Rabindranath Tagore. The timings of the show are as follows: the show timings are based on season basis.From November to January the show timings are:

  • From 6.00 pm to 6.40 pm in Bengali Language
  • From 7.00 pm to 7. 40 pm in English language

From February to June the timings of the show are:

  • 7.00 pm to 7.40 pm in Bengali Language
  • 8.00 pm to 8.40 pm in English language
