Pune: Problems regarding the widening of highways are probably headed for a solution or so it seemed from the Tuesday meeting of the public works department (PWD) and the national highway authority of India (NHAI).National and state highway traffic that passes through Pune had been increasing everyday causing worsening traffic congestions. Immediate action was for long overdue to bring the traffic under control especially that of heavy vehicles. District collector Vikas Deshmukh, who had called the meeting, said, “The Pune-Nashik national highway, the Pune-Saswad-Jejuri state highway and the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur-Navhara road projects have been delayed due to villagers’ opposition to acquisition of land. I have now asked officials concerned to hold discussions with villagers and initiate land acquisition process on priority. The officials will get police protection if required.”Most of the work for road construction has been stuck due to opposition from villagers. The administration has already surveyed nine villages along the pune Nasik highway. But villagers have opposed the land acquisition and detained work. Same happening has also occurred in the Pune-Saswad-Jejuri road project. The administration is working hard on solving such issues.The government’s plans for road expansion include widening of the Pune-Nasik highway and also the widening of the Pune-Saswad-Jejuri highway. Both the highways will be made into four lanes which would be an improvement on their present status of two-lane highways. The Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur-Nhavra road is also being planned to be made into four lanes.A 13 km by-pass between Talegaon and Chakan is also being planned which will pass through the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area. This project will require 53 hectares of land.The widening of the Pune-Nasik highway will facilitate the movement of traffic and solve traffic congestion problems for Alephata, Narayangaon and Chakan. Heavy vehicles coming from Mumbai will not have to enter the city anymore.
