With the advent of luxurious high rises, the term “penthouse” has flooded the property marketing advertisements. Though it is a relatively new concept in India, it had been in use in western world for decades. In the US the first penthouse came to exist in the 1920s in New York City. A penthouse is the highest floor of an apartment building and is mostly located on the terrace or other setbacks designed for penthouses. It is isolated from other apartments and comes with certain luxury features not available in the other apartments.Certain features of penthouses are:

- Located high up means a penthouse always comes with a view. It may be a view of the city, of the sea or a view of the surrounding greens. - Penthouses layouts are different from the layouts of other apartments and are generally more spacious.
- Penthouses often come with separate rooms for laundry and have walk-in closets.
- Swimming pools, Jacuzzi, plunge pools etc. can be incorporated into a penthouse.
- A penthouse on the highest floor of a high-rise means serenity even if the building is located in the busiest part of the city.
- Penthouses are provided with separate entrances or elevators.
- Even if all the other units in the apartment come with a single floor, a penthouse can be a duplex. This means one can have an office within the house or separate the living space from entertainment space.
- Penthouses come with luxuries such as built in gymnasium, in house cinema, game lounge, spa, library, grand stair case, skylights, hardwood flooring, granite kitchen tops, breakfast island, barbecue grills and everything else imaginable to be living a life on the top. Some even come with artificial waterfalls, fountains and aquariums.
- Residents of the penthouse can have their private garden on the terrace.
All in all, living in a penthouse is a statement luxury and wealth. Coming back home would really mean an escape from everyday stress and you can party without disturbing your neighbors because unlike the other apartment dwellers, you will be having none. Nowadays many buildings come with more than one penthouse. One of the only disadvantages of a penthouse is that travelling from the bottom to the top might be a bit time consuming. And if you do not have a separate elevator then the journey would be cumbersome. Also be wary when buying a penthouse. It must come with most of the above feature.
