Pune: The citizens of the Pimpri Chinchwad Corporation prefer paying the property tax online. It has been found that the number of residents who are paying the tax via internet are doubling every year. The civic body had launched the online payment system in the year 2010-11 but it extracted fewer response (only 9,338 citizens paid their property tax online) from the citizens in the starting phase. But as the future unfolded itself and citizens turned to netizens, the number rose to 15,783 in the year 2011-12 and in the current financial year, the number has been recorded at staggering 25,667.Generally people who have access to the internet (primarily industrial units and IT professionals) prefer to pay the property taxes online because then they don’t have to wait in the queues in the tax collection offices. As people are becoming tech-savvy and the major work now is being done using the web world, the corporation is also trying to optimize their system to facilitate the user.In the PCMC limits, there are around 3.39 lakh properties from which a property tax of total Rs 250 crore has to be collected. Till now Rs 227 crore has been collected of which Rs 23.56 crore was paid using the online service. The property holders who have arrears of more than Rs 1 lakh have been sent seizure notices and stringent actions are planned for the tax defaulters.
