Pune: In 2008, the civic body of Pune had adopted an eco-housing policy en route to promote environmental, health and economic benefits that are derived from green buildings. The policy aims to educate the developers, architecture and buyers about the effectiveness and advantages of green homes that have a deep positive impact on the picture of the city. However it is found that only 35 out of around 10,000 buildings that have been developed in the last five years have attained the status of the eco friendly structure. An average of 2,000 buildings are permitted for construction per year by the PMC, elongating that for five years, 10,000 are constructed. But comparing the allocation of green building with the usual building permit, it’s strikingly low.The grounds on which the buildings are fathomed for green building status are intelligent site planning, solid waste management, water conservation (rain water harvesting), efficient use of building materials and energy conservation. According to all these points, the buildings have to score more than 800 out of 1000 to get the star (1-5) rating. Generally in Pune, most green buildings are above 3 star.New measures to make the concept of green building more effective are made by the corporation that will include better scientific methods for the preservation of the environment. But still the number produced in the data is saddening and low. There is a great need to multiply the number of eco friendly structures that will help us in sustainable development such that our offsprings will enjoy the same as we are doing.
