As we all know that the last days of life Gandhiji spent in Delhi it becomes important for Gandhi followers to know where he lived, what he did during his last days. If you are a Gandhian then you must be interested to visit the place known as Gandhi Smriti. This peaceful place used to be the home of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in his last few months of life. This house was actually belonged to Indian business tycoon B. D. Birla who was quite close to Gandhiji. Gandhiji stayed in Birla Bhavan from 9th September 1947 till his death on 30 January 1948. He was shot dead by Nathuram Godse when he was going to offer his evening prayers in open space of Birla House. That is why this place is so important in the history of our country and thus government decided to dedicate this place to honour Mahatma Gandhi. Government acquired Birla House in the year 1971 to turn it into a place to remember Gandhiji.This house was previously known as Birla House or Birla Bhavan but now it is Gandhi Smriti. It was opened for public viewing on 15 the august 1973. The Gandhi Smriti is situated at Tees January Road in New Delhi just few kilometres away from famous Connaught Place. Gandhi Smriti is now converted into a museum that is dedicated to the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and you can find here articles related to his life and death, his last days’ photographs, some personal belongings, series of small dolls houses, terracotta dolls in order to exemplify life of Gandhiji and many more.Gandhi Smriti which is now a museum is established in the year 2005 by the name of The Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum. There is a multi media show held here every day between 1.00 pm to 1.30 pm. One of the exhibits at the museum displays Satya Ahimsa written in Hindi. There is a pillar you can see just outside the house having a swastika symbol in order to make understand the different meanings perceived of the symbol by different societies. The Sanskrit symbol Om is also written on the pillar which is a meditation sound used in Hindu culture.At the Gandhi Smriti the spot where Gandhiji was assassinated is specified by a small chatari supported by four columns and it is called The Martyr’s Column. Visitors can visit the house and the prayer ground where he used to pray every day to remember the Father of Nation.
