jantar-mantarOne of the National Monuments of country Jantar Mantar is quite significant ancient place in the city of Delhi. Let me first explain you what is the meaning of Jantar Mantar and what this place is all about. Jantar Mantar is basically Hindi language words. Jantar stands for instruments while Mantar stands for formula or mantra. From the first look it may look like some sort of art gallery or art centre but actually it is an astronomical observatory. This observatory has thirteen astronomical instruments. The creator of this and four other such sites is Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II (1699-1743) from Jaipur. He was quite a dedicated astronomer who wanted to eliminate the errors made by brass and metal astronomical instruments. He was quite a dignified personality in the court of Mughals. Thus with the support of Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah he started the task of creating error free astronomical instruments. He even tried to revise the existing tables of astronomy and updating the astronomical calendar with some error free and more reliable instruments. With his hard work and efforts of seven long years he came up with the creation of Jantar Mantar which has 13 architectural astronomy instruments. This observatory is made up of entirely stone and marbel with engraved astronomical scales. It is the first among the five astronomical observatories that were built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II from 1724 onwards. In Jantar Mantar you can see the huge Sandstone astronomy instruments. The construction work of this observatory was actually completed in the year 1724 but on one of the tablets fixed in the year 1910 on one structure in Jantar Mantar mistakenly dates it to be built in 1710 which is a wrong date.Accumulating the astronomical tables along with predicting the time and various movements of astronomical bodies like the sun, moon, planets, forecasting weather changes, etc. were the actual purpose to create this observatory. These studies are collectively known as Astronomy today. Jantar Mantar Observatory has many instruments among which Samrat Yantra, the Ram Yantra, Jai Prakash, Mishra Yantra are some of the most significant instruments.Samrat Yantra also known as Supreme Instrument (Prince of Dials) is a simple but the largest equal hour sundial. It is a giant triangle with a height of 70 feet, length at base 114 feet and width of 10 feet. The other instrument called Ram Yantra is actually two circular buildings with open top used for reading altitudinal angles. Another instrument known as Jayaprakash Yantra has hollowed hemispheres having some markings on concave surfaces. The purpose to build this instrument is to ascertain the position of sun and other celestial bodies. The Mishra Yantra is made of four scientific gadgets standing in the North West of the Samrat Yantra. It was used to show when the noon time comes in different places in the world. This is the only Yantra in the observatory not invented by Jai Singh II. There are pillars on the southwest of Mishra Yantra which were used to measure the longest day (21June) and the shortest day (21 December) of the year. there is a small Hindu Chhatri which is a small domed structure used to forecast weather changes. The other four observatories built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II between 1727 and 1734 are situated in Jaipur (Rajasthan), Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), Mathura (Uttar Pradesh) and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh).Jantar Mantar is located at Parliament Street close to Connaught Place in New Delhi.Jantar Mantar also known as Delhi Observatory is a masterpiece of ancient Indian architecture.
