Ahmedabad: In accordance to the proposal sent out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), property tax is likely to be doubled for the coming fiscal year. The revision in property tax rates is expected to become functional in 2013. The property tax is expected to double on residential properties based on the carpet value. For Commercial properties, the proposed hike rate is almost 60%. This proposal will find grounds only if approved by the concerned civic bodies.The AMC is looking into all possible alternatives of fund raising. Through this move there will be a revenue inflow of almost 211 crore for the AMC. Based on these lines, if you own a property in the Satellite area and have been paying a tax of Rs. 5,000 then you are likely to shell out Rs.10,000 towards property taxes from this year onwards.Besides the tax hike, water meters are likely to be installed in buildings from the 1st of April 2013. The motive behind this step is to monitor usage of water. Also hike in vehicle tax has also been proposed. An increase of almost 1.25% is expected in the tax rate for vehicles. Moreover for luxury vehicles the surcharge will be of almost 2.25% over and above the existing value.The AMC will be given a green signal since the proposed tax hike seems to be the only way out to cover up the revenue deficit.
