Solution to Water Crisis: Rain Water Harvesting

As the name suggest rain water harvesting is a method of using rain water for domestic and agricultural purpose. It is not new to us. This method is used since ancient time and is quite practical seeing the problem of water crisis throughout the world. It is basically accumulating or storing the rain water that can be used as drinking water, irrigation or for live stock. It helps in recharging the ground water.Method of rain water harvesting:Three simple steps of rain water harvesting are-1. Catchment: Any surface or paved area can be treated as catchment. Roof tops are the best place to catchment as the water is rarely contaminated.2. Conveyance: It is a system which has rain gutters and down pipes that can collect the rain water from catchment to the storage area or the ground recharging.3. Storage: Rain barrels, underground or open slumps, concrete tanks, man made ponds or the soil under the ground can store the rain water. It depends on the purpose of usage of water as if we want to recharge ground then we direct the pipes of roof water to soil or bore well system but if we want to use it for irrigation then we need to collect and store it in a tank.Rain water harvesting is important in the areas where:1. Ground water is contaminated or scarce.2. Ground water level is going down.3. Population density is high.4. Water is too hard/mineral laden.5. Natural calamities like dry and floods are common.6. Conservation is the objective.7. Electricity and water charges are rising.8. People want low sodium and chlorine in water.Advantages of rain water harvesting:1. It helps in improving the quality of ground water and increasing the ground water level.2. It reduces the loss of top layer of soil and helps in improving the overall floral system.3. It reduces the risk of flooding of roads.4. It helps in reducing the dependency on the dams for water requirements.5. It is naturally pure and soft(no minerals dissolved).6. Free for those who collect it and the method is easy.7. Free from chlorine and its by products.8. Free from pesticides and man made contaminants.9. Not subject to pipeline interruption.10. Quality is controlled by consumer.11. Helps in ground water recharge that is the main source of water in most of the parts of India.12. Can be used in irrigation where larger quantity of water is required.13. Other uses may include laundry, animal and livestock drinking water, toilet flushing, swimming pool replenishment, watering the plants, etc.14. It is a perfect solution for water requirements in the areas where water is insufficient.Pune can make rain water harvesting work. As the new constructions is in full swing in and around Pune. It can be the best solution for water crisis along with good selling point for developers as a eco friendly structure. If government makes it compulsory for new buildings to have a RWH system it will solve half of the water problems by recharging ground water.Over 6.5 lacs properties in Pune only 600 have the RWH system that is not a good number. We should altogether make an effort to raise the number. The PMC grants concession in property tax to societies who have implemented Eco friendly techniques like rain water harvesting, solar heating or vermin composting.A 5 percent rebate if any one technique is used, 10 percent rebate if two techniques are implemented. That is an encouragement for societies though it is not compulsory in Pune. It is our moral responsibility to save our Earth by any means we can after all the Mother Nature gives us not only life but everything to survive.ByRuchi Mahajan (Contributor)займ на карту без отказов круглосуточновзять кредит онлайн
