Officially called as Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, it took around Rs. 1600 Crores in the making and was completed in a time span of 3 years. The Expressway was made as an alternative to the old Pune – Mumbai highway (NH4) which had become prone to overcrowding, congestions and accidents over time. The main goal behind making of the new expressway was to reduce the travel time between the two cities by providing more road space and travel standard’s for the commuters. The State Government has not only succeeded in delivering a global standard infrastructure for the citizens but also has managed to reduce the travel time by an astounding two hours. The expressway slivers through a landscape of mountains and scenic valleys making it a splendid journey for the travellers. Monsoons especially make the driving experience more enjoyable. The Expressway starts at Panvel near Mumbai and ends at Dehu near Pune. The distance between Pune and Mumbai is 160 kilometres and there are many towns along the expressway like Karjat, Khopoli, Lonavala, Khandala, Malavli, and Talegaon apart from few other villages. Lonavala and Khandala are Hill Stations on the Deccan Ghats and are favourite weekend destinations for Pune and Mumbai people. Malavli is situated exactly at the mid-point of the Pune –Mumbai Expressway and is also a weekend getaway. The famous Karla & Bhaja caves in the Sahyadri Mountain range are close to Malavali and fall under historical tourism. Lohagad and Visapur Forts also stand witness to the travellers on the expressway. Talegaon is a significant industrial zone accessible from the Expressway near Dehu. The MSRDC has set up 4 food-malls along the expressway. With more than 18000 people travelling on the expressway every day, the options vary from a quick bite to a complete meal. International brands like McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Subway along with local foods give good options for people who stop over. The Expressway is built with sophisticated technology and modern machineries as per international standards. Keeping the safety in mind, a traffic control fence and compound is built on both sides of the expressway. Two wheelers, three wheelers and tractors are banned on the expressway. The speed limit is kept up to 80KM per hour. A subway is constructed every 300 to 500 meters for local villagers. Petrol pumps are provided at necessary intervals. Highway police stations are present for immediate assistance. Crane facilities are available for eliminating accident vehicles. First aid is also made available with the highway control authorities. A toll free help line number is displayed every 100 meters for commuter’s convenience. The project operates on ‘Built Operate Transfer’ (BOT) Basis. Toll Plazas are constructed at four places on the Expressway. There are six tunnels along the Expressway along north & south directions namely; Bhatan, Madap, Adoshi, Khandala, Kamshet 1 and Kamshet 2. All these tunnels are provided with modern lighting, ventilation, and fire fighting systems. The completion of the Expressway and its successful manoeuvre for the past years have aided in increasing real estate prices in the nearby vicinities. Growth has been evident in all sectors like infrastructure, land prices, tourism, transportation and industrialisation.Following the success of the project MSRDC has planned an expansion of the Expressway from Panvel to Sion in Mumbai. The 22 kilometers expansion of the expressway will cost approximately Rs.800Crores and will commence in the near future. The expansion will cut the travel time more by 30 minutes. The Expressway has become a lifeline for the people of Pune and Mumbai. The IT and educational hub of India and the commercial capital of India are now business proficient like never before. Real Estate Effect of Mumbai-Pune ExpresswayThe stretch along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has witnessed immense growth of development especially infrastructure development. Regions situated along Mumbai-Pune Expressway provide easy accessibility to prominent IT destinations of the city; hence the inflow of IT professionals in the adjacent regions like Hinjewadi, Baner, Aundh, and Bavdhan is increasing exponentially. Even the regions like Gahunje, Chakan are also coming up as new residential destinations due to the easy connectivity with prominent cities like Mumbai and Pune through Mumbai-Pune Expressway.Locations situated along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway are majorly catering the needs of mid and low income groups due to the affordable prices in the areas. Many builders and developers have come up with several residential and integrated township projects in the adjacent area of the Expressway. Pollution free environment, hustle free traffic along with lush greenery making these locations most favored residential destinations on the outskirts of the Pune city. Some of the upcoming projects situated along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway include Lodha Belmondo by Lodha Group
