Failing to do so will cause it to become illegal.&nbsp;<strong>Why to register Marriages?<\/strong>The reason people do not consider it necessary to register their marriage is due to their ignorance towards the many benefits of registration. The stringent rules implemented by the court to register marriages are more of a social concern than personal interest.<strong>Benefits of Marriage registration are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To ensure that the bride and groom are of legal age of marriage (18 for the bride and 21 for the bridegroom).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Certificate of marriage<\/strong> is a legal proof for obtaining passport, visas and other primary documents.<\/li>\n<li>Marriage certificate is of importance while applying for loan or claiming bank deposits and Life insurances.<\/li>\n<li>Marriage registration is a <strong>valuable document<\/strong> in case of divorce or taking any legal action against any one of the spouse involved in an unlawful practice.<\/li>\n<li>Availing Tax exemptions, Medical reimbursement, housing and employment benefits.<\/li>\n<li>Receive social security, Medicare and disability benefits from the government.<\/li>\n<li>Smoothen the process of spouse\u2019s property inheritance in case of death.<\/li>\n<li>Avail consumer benefits meant for married couples.<\/li>\n<li>Quick adoption process, availing public assistance and special loans.<\/li>\n<li>Government rules and regulations which otherwise would take a longer period of time are quickly completed in case of a registered marriage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Marriage Registration Process:<\/strong>The procedure of marriage registration tends to differ from one jurisdiction to another. There are two cases wherein the couples who are already married but have not registered their marriage or couples who are planning for a court marriage.<strong>Marriage solemnized but not registered:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The parties (married) must obtain a form in order to apply for registration which has to be filled in and submitted within a specified period time along with all the mandatory documents and a prescribed fee at the registrar office.<\/li>\n<li>The marriage certificate can be obtained within 7 days of registration.<\/li>\n<li>The form filling procedure can also be done online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Court Marriage:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In case of \u2018Court Marriage\u2019 both parties submit a joint application along with the relevant <strong>documents at the registrar office<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>After a month notice, the parties along with three witnesses must appear in front of the registrar on a given fixed date.<\/li>\n<li>Signatures of the two parties and witnesses are obtained on the official documents.
